Color Block Mesh Triangle Shawl

My cousin recently graduated from high school and I wanted to make her something special to commemorate the occasion. I made one of these mesh triangle scarves/shawls about a year ago and thought it would be just the thing. I love the way it turned out! It’s fun and has a lot of movement to it. It is a very simple pattern made up of chain stitches and single crochet and it works up very fast!

Want to make your own? Here’s how!

  • Approximately 300 yards of medium weight yarn (or a lighter weight yarn). I used Caron Simply Soft Yarn in black and iris.
  • 5 mm hook (or hook size recommended for your yarn)
  • yarn needle to weave in ends

This pattern is written in US terms.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
slp st = slip stitch

Turn your work at the end of each row.

ch 7, slp st in the 1st chain to join into a circle

Row 1: ch 7, sc into the circle, ch 5, sc into the circle

Row 2: ch 7, sc into the last loop you made, ch 5, sc into the next loop, ch 5, sc into the same loop

Row 3: ch 7, sc into the loop, *ch 5, sc into the next loop* – repeat * to the last loop – ch 5, sc into the same loop again

Repeat row 3 to your desired length. I did 48 rows to make my triangle scarf and alternated colors every 8 rows (3 sections of each color).

To finish my scarf, I cut 153 pieces of 8 1/2 inch fringe (76 purple and 77 black). I placed three strands of yarn (2 black/1 purple) in the point of the scarf. I then put fringe in the first open space on either side of the point and continued in every other end space up the sides of the scarf (alternating 2 purple/1 black, 2 black/1 purple). I ended with fringe in the last two end spaces on each side of the scarf.

You could easily add additional rows to this scarf to make it dual purpose as large shawl and a triangle scarf.
